Geomagic Design X High Resolution Patch Count Auto-Surfacing

Unread post by LetWavesCrash »

Hi,

I have been trying to figure out a way to get Auto-Surfacing patch count to go beyond 9000 on Geomagic Design X so that I can get higher resolution on some surface textures from zBrush. I have already applied zRemesh - Divide - Divide - Project on the surface texture already to get an optimized low-polycount surface from zBrush. Once in Design X, there is always a ceiling on Auto-Surfacing patch count. So the end result will always be a bit disappointing if I want a higher resolution texture on the solid model. Are there any work around or other software that can get higher resolution?

Thanks

I did realize that I can get to 9999 target patch count. Great, 10% more! Well I guess I can live with the results but I'm always curious if we can get better results?

Can you upload your mesh file? I have an idea I'd like to test.

Let's try a pattern with sharper detail then. I've attached the files below and the 10000 patch count result.

It's not bad, but again just wondering if there is better alternatives.

I had to shrink the file size a bit to meet the 50MB file size limit here.

You can use the Split tool in DesignX to divide your mesh into smaller sections and then auto-surface each of those to the 10,000 patch maximum. So splitting the mesh into 4 parts quadruples the patches to 40000.

I'm going out on a limb here to suggest that it's not about increasing the patching count as much as you'll need to add the additional step of pulling the resulting auto-surface geometry back down onto the mesh. This will help to increase the amount of detail that is captured.

You're not wrong for wanting to increase the patch count but when working in CAD it's not like working with meshes and SubD. I'll upload some (.step) files later that show some of this process.
