SW 2022 stability

Unread post by Uncle_Hairball »

Not complaining (at the moment), just asking for information. Is SW2022 incurably unstable or is it me? I can make it my VAR's problem, but I don't want to waste my time if it's an incurable problem. How is it for you?

Seems quite arbitrary without any context in terms of what you're doing, when it's crashing...etc.

There is a known stability issue in 2022 SP0 to SP3.1 (SPR 1236674) that as been fixed in 2022 SP4. For SP3.1 there is a hotfix available (see https://www.solidworks.com/sw/support/hotfixes.htm).
Maybe you want to try that first.

I have been having SW 2022 freeze up requiring me to use task manager to kill it and restart. Seems to happen when I am picking faces on multiple parts.

I've been using it since shortly after it was released, and am currently on service pack 4.0. I've had a few crashes, but no more than any other version, and fewer than some (and I've used most of them going back to SW2009). I go days without one.

For anyone who is seeing stability issues with it, are you using PDM? Through thirteen years of following SW forums I've gotten the impression that people using it have more problems with crashes than those of us who don't.

Hey Glenn, how is 2022 SP4 comparing to 2018 in terms of stability and performance..?

Having used SW and PDM since 2009, few (if any) SW stability issues are caused by PDM. They aren't all that interconnected. The PDM add-in running in SW doesn't interact with SW much beyond telling it which files are checked in/out. PDM is far more likely to cause problems with the explorer.exe process due to memory leaks.

SolidWorks already causes it's lot of explorer.exe hanging for ridiculous things so I'd assume adding PDM to SolidWorks must cause SolidWorks to have explorer.exe hanging even more often. I don't use PDM though, so I wouldn't know.

We just upgrade from v2021 SP5 to v2022 SP3.1

Yeah, a definite uptick in the number of crashes to desktop.

While others may have had different experiences, I don't remember any special problems with SW2018, so from my perspective it's about the same. In other words, while it's not perfect, the crashes don't happen enough to be a big problem.

There were a few things I didn't like about SW2022 initially, but they've done a pretty good job of fixing those.

Thank you all for your input. It sounds as if 2022 isn't significantly worse than any other version, so it's probably something wrong with my installation. I'll try the hotfix, then bug the VAR again.

Which service pack are you using?

I'm on 4.0, so the hotfix isn't going to help. Gotta' call the VAR.

I am curious why you went to SP3.1 instead of 4.

Sigh. It wasn't available at the time...

I'm rearranging some drawings that someone else did and I can reproducibly cause Swx 2022 SP3.1 to hang by saving a drawing with another name.

It saves the file ok, but never returns control to the user.
