What's with the X?

For cross-CAD, learning, and maybe a little friendly competition.

What's with the X?

Unread post by jcapriotti »

What's with the fascination of naming products "X" something? Is it because X is underused in words? Obsession with the X-Men comics? X-rated movie aficionados?

Dassaults xApps (xDesign, xShape, xGenerative Design) Lowercase x
SolidWorks (DimXpert, DraftXpert, FeatureXpert, FilletXpert, MateXpert, SketchXpert) Uppercase X <()>
XPLM (PLM Integration company)
Solid Edge (Xcelerator Share)
Bluebeam eXtreme edition (Ok not just x but they capitalize it)

Is this just xtreme marketing xperts that like to make xceptions to the rules to try and further xploit their customers by appearing to be xtra hip?

People got bored with "i"?

The real reason is that for the most part people are quite unimaginative and afraid to be different. Even those that are trying to be different end up being exactly different like a bunch of other people.

I think one of the most glaring examples of this is in general media news. It's amazing how "The same" news of every type is down to the words used. I remember someone put together a montage of news people saying "gravitas" in reference to Cheney during that presidential campaign. Here's a word that has been around forever that you rarely heard and suddenly you couldn't turn on a Top 40's music station without hearing a quick news clip with "gravitas" said somewhere in it.

Sorry, rant over, but in reality "x" is just another one of those. Soon it will be something else. I also can't wait for "Industry 4.0" and "ai" to die as well.

By the way, the Xcelerator Share is named that way as it is part of the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio.

Just think about how much of your subscription money goes to the fat salary of the marketing people that come up with all these "original" trademarks where the name says nothing about function.

"all the cool kids are using X, so we need to get with the times and use X too." What's next? Pig Latin in the "What's new"? Give them time, it will be cool again.

it's often used in association with another word.

In most cases, the x is an acronym of "external"

My thought on "X" is that it is always something Xtra and most of the time not needed

Dassaults xApps (xDesign, xShape, xGenerative Design) Lowercase x
Never really use this and dont think i really need this
SolidWorks (DimXpert, DraftXpert, FeatureXpert, FilletXpert, MateXpert, SketchXpert) Uppercase X
Used once or twice, but in the end I had stick with the non X feature/function

So i guess... they are really Xtra?

Far too many items in the world are designed, constructed and foisted upon us with no understanding-or even care-for how we will use them.

Well, if they keep with this theme for the next 3DXworld it should make for some interesting costumes in the opening sessions. <()>

Since we're on Marvel, this progression of renaming everything with silly names then digging deeper to justify the silly names reminds me of Taser Face trying to justify his glorious name to Rocket and that awkward moment when all his cronies are like "um yeah, ok. I kinda get it."

Obviously it's grumpy middle-aged men, like most of us. (My apologies to the cheerful young female members.)

As I deal with my fading eyesight and memory it's nice to hear you still consider yourself "middle aged." Makes me feel better. Although still grumpy.

Perspectives change. There was a time I would have considered 60 old without a second thought. Now it's middle aged.
